Each area in home has its own role and function; Entrance area お家のそれぞれのエリアにはそれぞれの役割と機能がある（玄関編）

今日はお家の中でも最も大事なスポットと言っても過言ではない玄関のお話をします。

Entrance area is made to welcome us and our guests.

玄関は、私たちやゲストを迎え入れるためのスペースです。

Nobody put a bed right in front of the entrance door, right?

Because a bed is made to let us sleep on, and it is not made for welcoming people in the entrance area. Very simple.

誰も玄関ドアを開けたすぐそこに、ベッドを配置するような人はいませんよね？

そもそもベッドは寝るために作られた物ですし、玄関で人を迎え入れるためのアイテムには相応しくありません。とてもシンプルですね。

We feel good when being welcomed to home by beautiful flowers, green, art, scent and sound rather than something else such as garbage bin which smells so bad.

あるいは、悪臭を放つゴミ箱に迎え入れられるよりは、美しいお花・観葉植物・アート・香りや音などで迎え入れられた方が私たちは良い気分がするはずです。

I have seen many people including my clients ( and I used to be one of them before ) who ignore entrance area's role and purpose, and force it to play a different role (like storage?) and do not let it shine as it is supposed to be.

過去の私自身を含め、多くの人々がこの玄関の役割と目的を無視して、あたかも（物置き場のように）別の役割を演じさせて、玄関が玄関として輝けないような使い方をしています。

But is it actually a very sad thing for us and for the entrance space as well. The entrance area wants to welcome us very nicely and friendly to make us happy, which is their purpose and role. We should allow them to do their job.

しかしそれは本当に悲しいことなんです、私たちにとっても玄関にとっても。玄関は、私たち人間を優しく温かく迎え入れたくてしょうがないんです。そしてそれが彼らの役割。私たちは、玄関に彼らの使命を全うさせてあげなくては。

When I visit my client's home, first I review the entrance area very carefully and try to see how I feel; Am I feeling very welcomed, accepted...? Try to see if I feel good as entering into the house, walking along the hall way to the living room...

私がクライアントさんのお宅を訪問する際は、玄関の状態をよく観察します。そしてどんなフィーリングを受けるかをみます。私は歓迎されているかしら？受け入れられているかしら？…玄関のドアを開けて中へ入り、廊下を通ってリビングに向かう間、そのことに集中します。

At this point, I do not think anything else but just focus on feeling. And I check if the entrance area covers these following points;

その際には、私は風水の方角がどうとか考えずに、とにかくフィーリングを大事にします。そして以下の３ポイントがその玄関に見られるかどうかをチェックします。

1) Brightness

2) Clearness

3) Welcoming hospitality (good scent/sound/art/flowers, etc..)

１）明るさ

２）綺麗、清潔さ

３）ウェルカム感、おもてなし感（良い香り、音、アート、お花など）

In fact, almost all my clients put inappropriate things for welcoming us into home before they had consultation with me; such as Dyson's vacuum cleaners, refrigerator (!!), tons of pairs of shoes and slippers, etc. They kept those items in the entrance area without any deep thinking and they paid little attention to the entrance area's role and function.

Anytime I see this kind of items which should not belong to the entrance area, whose role is "welcome us to home warmly", in the entrance area in my client's house, I ask her/him to remove them right away.

実際に、私のクライアントさんのほとんどは私のコンサルテーションを受けるまで、人をお迎えするアイテムとしては相応しくない物を玄関に置いていました。例えば、ダイソンの掃除機・冷蔵庫（！！）・何足もの靴やスリッパなどです。

クライアントさんたちは無意識のうちに、特に玄関の役割が何なのかを考えることなくそれらの物を玄関に置いていました。玄関に置くのに相応しくない物を見つけるたびに、私はクライアントさんたちに即それらのアイテムを玄関から退けるようにお願いしています。

My client Kazuyo used to keep a slipper rack which was filled with lots of pairs of slippers.

お客様のカズヨさんの玄関には、当初たくさんのスリッパでぎっしり詰まったスリッパラックが正面に置かれていました。

After consultation, she removed this slipper rack and put a table here instead, and she put flower arrangement. (And she still does.)

コンサルテーション後は、スリッパラックを撤去して代わりにテーブルを置き、その上にフラワーアレンジメントを置くようになりました。

Nana used to keep a refrigerator in the entrance area because she believed that it did not fit her small kitchen, which did not have a good outlet situation.

ナナさんは以前まで冷蔵庫を玄関エリアに置いていました。なぜなら、狭いキッチンにあるソケットにはうまく接続できないと信じ込んでいたためです。

But after the consultation, she could move the refrigerator to the kitchen and it fit well. The entrance area started playing its role "welcoming warmly".

ひかしコンサルテーション後、キッチンへ冷蔵庫を移動することができ、キッチンにちゃんと収まりました。玄関がやっと本来の役目である”暖かくお迎えする”ことを始めました。

Kana's entrance used to have TWO Dyson's vacuum cleaners (on the left in this picture). As I said before, the entrance area should have appropriate items to welcome us, such as beautiful flowers, plants, welcoming art, and nice scent. Vacuum cleaner's role is "clean rooms", not "welcome us warmly".

カナさんの玄関には２台ものダイソン掃除機が置かれていました（写真左）。すでに述べた通り、玄関にはぜひ人を暖かくお迎えするためにふさわしいアイテムを置いてください。掃除機は、「部屋を掃除するための道具」であり、お出迎えには不向きです。

After the consultation, Kana's entrance area became more welcoming. No more vacuum cleaner but beautiful flowers and brighter colored art are welcoming us.

コンサルテーション後、カナさんの玄関はとてもウェルカム感が増しました。掃除機がなくなって、代わりに美しいお花・もっと明るい色彩のアートがお出迎えしてくれます。

All of my clients who experienced new entrance arrangement told me that they feel so happy when they come home. They also told that they love their home more than before.

私のクライアントさんはみんな、玄関をアレンジした後は、必ず「家に帰るたびに嬉しくなります。」と言ってくださいます。また、お家のことが以前よりも大好きになったとも言われていました。

I am not telling you to make the entrance area drastically beautiful and attractive as if it is the one in a showroom in the luxurious condo. That is not what we aim.

何も私は、高級コンドのショールームのような、美して豪華な玄関を作るように提案しているわけではありません。それは私たちのゴールではないです。

But my intention is to make you aware of what role the entrance area in your home has, how we can let it be working for you as it's supposed to be; welcome you to home warmly.

私の意図することは、皆さんにお家の中の玄関の使命は何か・どうやって玄関にその使命を果たしてもらうか（つまり温かく私たちを迎え入れる、という仕事）ということに気がついてもらうことです。

Before thinking about decorating the entrance area, or whatever area in your home, it is very important to focus on its space's purpose. Let it play its role in the best way.

玄関あるいはその他のエリアをデコレーションする前に、お家の中のそれぞれのエリアの役割を理解することに集中するのはとても大事です。そのエリアに、そのエリアなりの最高の仕事をしてもらいましょう。
