Feng shui is an ancient wisdom that came from China thousands of years ago. It’s principle is based on ying-yang & five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water) theory. In this philosophy, there is chi (life force, energy) flow in everything: human beings, animals, plants, and spaces - such as home, office and gardens. Also this energy is categorized in one of five elements, and they interact with each other by giving positive and negative effects to each other. Feng shui teaches us how to balance energy in us and in our space, and as a result of it’s harmony, we should expect prosperity, well being, and successful relationships.

Feng shui spread to the world from China, to Japan, to the Americas, India and European countries, and has been modified in unique ways that fits each culture. One of the most well known feng shui styles in the U.S. is called Black Hat Feng Shui. (It's often referred to as Western Feng Shui or BTB Feng Shui) Another type of Feng Shui - Flying Star is said to be the most powerful method.

Feng Shui consultant Ai's style is influenced by Japanese style since she learned feng shui interior coordinating in Japan. But she uses a multi-styled feng shui technique, such as BTB Feng Shui and Eight Mansion. She is one of the best Feng Shui interior decorators and she applies Feng Shui's philosophies into interior and color coordinating to make living spaces balanced.

Whatever style of feng shui interior design you choose, it should be something that suits you and your lifestyle.

Feng Shui, which originated in ancient China, has a history of thousands of years. Its foundation is the philosophy of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements, which teaches that everything—humans, animals, plants, and even buildings—flows with “Qi” (energy). Yin and Yang represent two opposing forces, and within them, energy is further classified into five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. These energies constantly interact with one another, both positively and negatively, to maintain balance. Feng Shui is the wisdom of harmonizing these energies within ourselves and our environment. When our surroundings are balanced, our relationships, health, work, and finances naturally flow more smoothly.

Over time, Feng Shui has evolved and adapted to the cultures and landscapes of different countries. When it was introduced to Japan during the Asuka and Nara periods, it was adjusted to fit the local climate and traditions—this is why Japanese Feng Shui is often seen as distinct from Chinese Feng Shui. Similarly, in America, Europe, and India, unique local variations of Feng Shui have developed. Still, whether in its original form or adapted styles, the goal remains the same: to create better lives by creating supportive environments.

In the United States, one of the most popular approaches is the Black Hat style, while Flying Star Feng Shui is considered one of the most powerful methods and is also widely practiced. Ultimately, which style you choose is a matter of personal preference. At Ai Feng Shui Interior Consulting, we draw on the essence of Japanese Feng Shui, while also incorporating other methods such as BTB and Eight Mansion.

In practice, when we bring Feng Shui elements into interior design, we begin by identifying which of the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) you align with. From there, we look at which directions, colors, materials, and arrangements suit you best—always making sure the space feels comfortable and authentic to you.

After all, Feng Shui should never feel forced. If a recommendation doesn’t fit your floor plan, your taste, or your daily lifestyle, it can create stress instead of harmony. That’s why our approach is flexible: we emphasize your comfort first, and only integrate Feng Shui elements that truly feel right for you.
